Environmental Policy Statement
The Environmental Policy of Johnsons has been prepared, approved and is fully endorsed by Senior Management. It supports the wider Sustainability Policy of the organisation and operates concurrently with our Carbon Reduction Plan, forming a key part of our commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices.
Johnsons recognises the importance of environmental protection and is committed to conducting all operations in a manner that prevents pollution, reduces environmental impact and enhances environmental performance. This commitment is integral to our business strategy, our culture and our long-term sustainability objectives.
Our Environmental Commitments
As part of our overarching commitment to responsible and sustainable operations, Johnsons maintains a zero-waste-to-landfill approach, ensuring that all waste materials are reused, recycled, or recovered through approved and ethical processes. We operate in full compliance with applicable UK environmental legislation, statutory requirements and recognised industry standards, and we take proactive steps to stay ahead of emerging regulatory expectations. Our Environmental Management System, certified to ISO 14001:2015, is continually reviewed and improved so that it remains effective, resilient and responsive to the changing environmental landscape. In support of our Carbon Reduction Plan, we actively work to reduce our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and, where possible, to influence waste reductions across our Scope 3 value chain. Underpinning all of this is our commitment to embedding sustainability principles—such as circular-economy thinking—into our planning, procurement, operational practices and strategic decision-making. This integrated approach ensures that environmental responsibility is not a standalone objective, but a consistent thread running through every level of our organisation.
Our Objectives and Focus Areas
To fulfil these targets, Johnsons will:
- Assess and regularly review the environmental impacts, risks and opportunities related to our activities, products and services.
- Minimise the production of waste and conserve resources, including material use, water consumption and energy demand.
- Promote the use of recyclable, reusable and renewable materials throughout our operations and supply chain.
- Reduce and prevent pollution to air, land and water, and actively minimise emissions associated with our fleet, facilities and logistics operations.
- Control and mitigate noise emissions from operational activities.
- Maintain robust environmental incident prevention and emergency response processes to safeguard employees, customers, contractors and the wider public.
- Engage suppliers and subcontractors to support responsible sourcing and environmentally preferable practices.
- Provide environmental training and awareness to employees to ensure they understand their responsibilities, contribute to environmental improvement and support compliance.
- Monitor, measure and transparently report progress, ensuring environmental objectives remain relevant and achievable.
Responsibilities
Directors, managers and supervisory staff are responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that environmental considerations are built into operational planning, risk management and day-to-day decision-making.
All employees and subcontractors are expected to co-operate fully, comply with environmental procedures and carry out their work—so far as reasonably practicable—without risk to themselves, others or the environment.
ESG Structure
Johnsons operates a robust ESG Structure of Responsibility that ensures effective leadership, governance, and accountability for environmental performance across the business. Strategic oversight is provided by the Board of Directors, supported by our Executive Sponsor for Sustainability, who champions the organisation’s ESG agenda. Our cross-functional Sustainability Steering Committee—comprising senior representatives from operations, transport, sustainability, governance, HR, finance, and each sub-brand—coordinates delivery of our Climate Transition Plan, monitors compliance with ISO 14001, and drives continuous improvement. Environmental responsibility is led operationally by the QHSE Director and Sustainability Manager, with additional specialist support from our Transport Manager and ESG Ambassadors across each division. This integrated governance structure ensures that environmental risks, opportunities, and performance are consistently managed, transparently reported, and embedded into everyday decision-making across Johnsons.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy will be reviewed
at least annually, or sooner if required by changes in legislation, organisational structure, operational practices or sustainability objectives. Commitment to continual improvement is fundamental to Johnsons’ approach to environmental management and long-term stewardship.
